The Process

Four steps. Then you just
wait for things to grow.

The Mason Jar Grow System is hydroponic — no soil needed for most plants.

01

Fill the reservoir

The bottom mason jar is your water reservoir. Fill it with clean water to the fill line. The glass keeps the water level visible so you always know when to top it up.

02

Attach your rooting plate

Snap the threaded sleeve onto the bottom jar, then thread the grow chamber jar on top. Drop in your rooting plate — different plates work better for different plants.

03

Plant

Add seeds or a seedling to the rooting plate. Set it somewhere with natural light. A south-facing windowsill is ideal, though a grow light works great too.

04

Watch it grow

Check the water level every few days. Top up when it drops below the rooting plate. Most herbs show root growth in 7–14 days. Sprouts ready in 3–5 days.

The modular part

Every sleeve, plate, and jar is interchangeable across units. Add more to grow multiple crops at once — one harvesting, one mid-growth, one just planted. You're never waiting.

Common questions

What plants work best?

Herbs (basil, mint, cilantro, thyme), sprouts (lentil, mung bean, sunflower), microgreens (radish, pea shoots), and leafy greens (lettuce, arugula, spinach). Anything that doesn't need to set fruit or deep roots.

Do I need to add nutrients?

For sprouts and short-term microgreens, plain water works fine. For herbs you're growing long-term, a small amount of liquid hydroponic nutrients keeps them producing well after the first few weeks.

How much light does it need?

South or west-facing windowsill is ideal. 4–6 hours of direct light per day works for most herbs. A basic grow light on a timer works great if your kitchen doesn't get much sun.

Can I use any mason jars?

Yes — standard wide-mouth mason jars (Ball, Kerr, or equivalent). The sleeve fits both 16oz and 32oz wide-mouth jars. We include jars in the complete kit.
